Jane Eyre. No wonder the Queen’s Hall, the temporary home of drama, could have been filled two or three times over on Friday evening, when Charlotte Bronte’s popular version of "Jane Eyre,” a play adapted for the stage by Helen Jerome, was presented by’the Arts Council Players in association with Anthony Hawtrey. A share of the credit in the production must be allocated to the Viking Players, who. through their producer, Miss A.K Sykes gave the crowded house the extreme pleasure and enjoyment of witnessing a "super" play by first class actors and actresses. Indeed, I cannot recall another instance during their several years' activities when their patrons were treated to a comparative city production for the modest sum of two shillings, the charge for the best seats, booking fee included. "Jane Eyre” portrayed Mary Mackenzie, Miss Greta Wood as "Mrs. Fairfax” and Mr Peter Murray as "Mr Rochester", the three most important characters in the play, were well supported by a strong cast. |
