According to The Era of Saturday, 20 March, 1886, "as Sir Frederick Sydney, Mr Charles Mortimer looked like the old-fashioned baronet whom he was supposed to represent, and played with such quiet dignity."
Interestingly, the following was also mentioned, "we must write a word in praise of the way in which the modern evening dress costumes of the gentlemen and the dresses of the ladies were made and worn. Details of this sort are too apt to be neglected at our outlying theatres, and nothing is more subversive of the poetry or romance of a character than the wearing by its representative of a dressuit suggestive of a second-rate waiter, with linen of a dous hue, and gloves to match. |
